Blue Cave

Blue Cave is located on the small island of Biševo, just off the coast of Vis, and is one of Croatia’s most magical natural wonders. The cave is known for its surreal glow, which occurs when sunlight enters through an underwater opening and illuminates the interior in brilliant shades of blue.

The experience itself is short but unforgettable. Visitors transfer to small boats and squeeze through a low, narrow entrance before emerging into a glowing chamber. For about ten minutes, you float through water that shimmers neon blue, while everything below the surface glows silver. It’s a simple moment, but one that leaves a lasting impression.

The best time to see this phenomenon is late morning, around 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., when the sun is high and the light effect is strongest. Most people visit with a guide from Vis, Hvar or even Split, often combining the cave with nearby attractions like Stiniva Bay or the Green Cave.

Biševo itself is worth exploring. Although small and sparsely populated, it has vineyards, sandy beaches and other caves, including the Seal Cave, once home to the rare Mediterranean monk seal. Many visitors choose to spend more time on the island of Vis, known for its unspoiled coastline, hidden coves and relaxed pace of life.

The Blue Cave is not a place where you will spend hours – it is small and swimming is not allowed – but its beauty is incomparable to any other place on the Adriatic. It is the kind of sight that turns a boat trip into a memory you will carry with you long after you leave the Croatian islands.
