Biokovo: Natural pearl of Dalmatia
Biokovo is a mountain that stretches along the Adriatic coast of Croatia, between the town of Makarska in the northwest and the town of Ploče in the southeast. Its steep cliffs and high peaks make it one of the most attractive mountain massifs on the Adriatic. Biokovo is of volcanic origin and is older than Dinara, another famous mountain in the region.
The geological composition of Biokovo and its location make it an extremely interesting and rich ecosystem. The mountain is exposed to the influences of different climate zones, from Mediterranean at lower altitudes to subalpine at the peaks. This creates diverse conditions for the growth of different plant and animal species.
Biokovo is home to over 1,500 plant species, some of which are rare and endemic. This includes the Biokovo degenia (Degenia velebitica), an endemic plant that grows only on Biokovo and Velebit. Biokov’s bluebell (Campanula zoysii) and Biokov’s crocus (Crocus biflorus subsp. Nargalicus) are also significant. These endemic species bear witness to the special ecological condition of the mountain and its importance for the preservation of biodiversity.
Mount Biokovo is also home to many animal species. Among them are the chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra), which has become a symbol of the mountain, and one of the largest populations of chamois in Croatia can be found here. Also, you can see different species of birds of prey such as griffon vultures (Gyps fulvus) and vipers (Circaetus gallicus).
The protected area of the Biokovo Nature Park includes the most valuable part of the mountain, while the rest is used for agriculture and animal husbandry. Sustainable management and protection of the mountain are key to preserving the natural environment, especially in light of the growing tourism in the region.
Biokovo has become a popular destination for nature lovers, mountaineers, and tourists who want to experience incredible panoramas from its peaks. Many paths lead to viewpoints that offer incredible views of the coast of the Adriatic Sea and neighboring islands such as Brač, Hvar and Pelješac. Mountaineering and hiking on Biokovo offer unforgettable experiences and the opportunity to enjoy untouched nature.
There is also the possibility of mountain climbing on Biokovo, which attracts adventurers and lovers of adrenaline sports. For those who prefer a more relaxed approach, mountain biking offers an enjoyable way to explore the mountains.

The settlements located on the slopes of Biokovo, such as Makarska, Baška Voda, Tučepi and Brela, offer a rich cultural and gastronomic offer. Visitors can explore preserved architecture, get to know local customs and taste traditional Dalmatian delicacies.
In addition to being a tourist attraction, Biokovo is also a source of scientific interest. Scientists study the diversity of flora and fauna, geological formations, hydrology and other aspects to better understand this unique ecosystem.
Biokovo is a mountain of exceptional natural beauty, which offers diverse opportunities for exploring and enjoying nature. Through sustainable management and protection, it is important to ensure that this natural beauty remains preserved for future generations.
